With Museum Shows in Europe, Barbie Gets Her Moment With the Masters
MILAN — When the Museum of Cultures opened here late
last year, banners on its facade in the Tortona district announced
coming marquee exhibitions: Gauguin, Miró — and Barbie.
The
doll beloved by generations of girls is having a moment among the
masters this year, with a flurry of international museum shows that
trace her cultural evolution over almost six decades, through silk
dresses and stilletto heels, sports cars, fold-out houses, and the
accoutrements of more than 150 occupations, including astronaut, pet
stylist and president.
