Doll Heights and Scale

As a doll collector, I love doll of various height, color and character/theme. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. I began thinking - what is considered full size - middie - mini? Does anyone really know?

I guess it depends both on the doll and the brand.
  • My Twinn - 22" to 23".
  • American Girl, Gotz, Journey Girls, Life of Faith - 18", American Girl, Gotz minis - 6.5".
  • Magic Attic, Battat, Carpatina - 17.5", Battat minis - 6.5".
  • Bitty Baby, Bitty Twin - 15".
  • Barbie, Liv - 11.5", Skipper - 9.5", Kelly - 4.5".
  • Monster High - 10.5" to 11".
  • Neo Blythe - 11", Middie Blythe - 7.75", Petite Blythe - 4".
  • Moxie Teenz - 14.5", Moxie Girlz - 10.5".
  • Lalaloopsy - 12", minis 3".
15" to 18" = 1:3 scale.
8" to 12" dolls = 1:6 scale.
4" to 7" = 1:12 scale.

With that clarified, true mini size is anything below 8".
Middie qualifies as any doll between 8" to 12".
Full size dolls range from 15" to 18".
Life size dolls 23".

Here is where it gets tricky for me. My other blog Living A Doll's Life is for full size dolls within the 17" - 18" range. This blog is for mini and middie dolls.
My recent series on the History of the Mini Doll began with 8" dolls. In my opinion the 8" dolls really were the first normal size dolls. Only in later years has our desire for taller, larger more life like dolls increased. I have an article ATTACK OF THE TALL DOLLS that speaks specifically about this.

  1. That's great! My daughter and I love petite Blythe and Kelly and Friends. Also, we have many of the Chelsea carnival dolls and let's not forgret barbie's sister Stacey! Stacey is my daughter's favorite Sister. We also collect Ty Little Ones. Looking forward to more about these girls. Thanks!
